France's gambling authority has ordered ISPs to block Polymarket, escalating its regulatory actions against the prediction market platform.

ANJ orders ISPs to block Polymarket as France tightens gambling regulations

The French gambling regulatory landscape is experiencing significant shifts as authorities take decisive action against prediction markets. The Autorité Nationale Des Jeux (ANJ) France’s independent gambling regulator, has recently ordered internet service providers to block access to Polymarket a popular prediction market platform.

This latest move comes as part of a broader effort to curb illegal gambling activities and protect French citizens from unregulated betting platforms. The ANJ’s actions reflect a growing concern about the accessibility of such platforms despite previous regulatory measures.

ANJ’s escalating actions against Polymarket

In, the ANJ initially imposed a geoblock on financial transactions from French residents on Polymarket’s website. However, the platform continued to attract users, with data showing 578,751 visits in June, including 205,057 unique visits from French residents. This persistent usage prompted the ANJ to take more stringent measures, including the recent ISP blocks.

The ANJ has emphasized that Polymarket is considered an illegal gambling site under French law. The regulator’s latest decision underscores its commitment to enforcing gambling regulations and preventing citizens from engaging in unauthorized betting activities.

Regulatory challenges and international implications

The crackdown on Polymarket is not limited to France. Neighboring Spain has also ordered the blocking of both Polymarket and Kalshi while investigating whether these platforms violate the country’s gambling laws. This coordinated effort highlights the broader regulatory challenges faced by prediction markets in Europe.

In the United States the state of Minnesota has taken a firm stance by passing a bill that bans prediction markets from operating within its borders. Other states are following suit by filing lawsuits against Polymarket and Kalshi, indicating a growing trend of regulatory scrutiny in the prediction market space.

The ANJ’s latest move includes a provision for fines of up to 100,000 euros (approximately $114,000) for anyone caught advertising unauthorized betting or gambling sites. This measure aims to deter the promotion of illegal gambling activities and protect consumers from potential harm.

As regulatory bodies worldwide continue to grapple with the challenges posed by prediction markets, the actions taken by France, Spain, and the US serve as a reminder of the evolving landscape of gambling regulations. The crackdown on Polymarket highlights the need for clear guidelines and enforcement mechanisms to ensure compliance with gambling laws and protect consumers from unregulated betting platforms.
