Brian Fraser’s career path is a testament to the unpredictable nature of professional journeys. With a background in public policy, Fraser never envisioned a career in technology. Yet, his natural aptitude for tech solutions led him to become the director of technology at the International Sleep Products Association (ISPA).
Fraser’s story begins after college, where he spent his early career in government affairs. His knack for troubleshooting tech issues made him the go-to person in both his professional and personal life. This unplanned trajectory eventually led him to ISPA, where he now oversees all systems, data, and tools, ensuring they are reliable, secure, and user-friendly.
An Unexpected Industry
Fraser’s entry into the mattress industry was serendipitous. He joined ISPA in 2017 as the program manager for industry statistics. The onset of COVID-19 thrust him into the technology side of the organization. Chief Marketing Officer Mary Helen Rogers’ words proved prophetic: “Once you get involved with this industry and this association, you never really leave.” Nearly a decade later, Fraser remains deeply embedded in the industry.
The mattress industry might seem an unlikely fit for a tech enthusiast, but Fraser has found it to be a collaborative and dynamic environment. ISPA’s small team, with many members having decades of experience, fosters a unique culture of collaboration. Departments often work together on projects, making it a truly collective effort.
Navigating the Pandemic
One of Fraser’s most significant achievements was guiding ISPA’s technology transition during the early years of the pandemic. The shift from on-premises systems to a more flexible, remote-friendly environment was a monumental task. This transition laid the groundwork for ISPA’s current operations.
Since then, Fraser has been instrumental in modernizing data storage and management, improving cloud collaboration and security, and supporting the rollout of Microsoft 365 tools. His role often involves behind-the-scenes improvements, such as refining access controls and troubleshooting issues, ensuring that technology supports staff efficiency.
A Life Beyond Work
Outside of his professional life, Fraser is a devoted family man. He lives in Falls Church, Virginia, with his wife, Trish, and their two daughters, Lilly and Caroline. His daughters, aged 7 and 5, keep life lively and entertaining. Fraser’s childhood was equally vibrant, growing up with two older brothers and a sister in Northern Virginia.
Fraser’s hobbies include spending time with his family, playing golf, and collecting bourbon. His passion for bourbon has led him on trips down the bourbon trail, including a hard-hat tour at Buffalo Trace. Recently, he won a lottery bottle from A. Smith Bowman, a Virginia sister site of Buffalo Trace.
Fraser’s love for baseball extends beyond his childhood. He played baseball from childhood through high school and was part of several state and high school championship teams. This background adds a unique dimension to his personality, which he describes as thoughtful, collaborative, and humorous.
When it comes to entertainment, Fraser’s choices are diverse. He enjoys watching “Bluey” with his kids and has a soft spot for rewatching older series like “Justified.” He also recommends “Shrinking” and “Your Friends and Neighbors” on Apple TV.
