According to Moody’s Ratings, the transformative potential of AI is not being realized equally across the region. Countries like Brazil and Chile are at the forefront, thanks to their robust infrastructure and investment in digital capabilities. However, the rest of the region is struggling to keep up, hindered by various challenges that are slowing down progress.
Brazil’s Dominance in the AI Landscape
Brazil stands out as a leader in AI adoption, accounting for nearly half of the region’s data center capacity. With a growth rate of 15% to 20% annually, the country is expanding its digital infrastructure rapidly. However, this growth is not without its challenges. Long queues for interconnection, insufficient transmission capacity, and delays in obtaining permits are creating bottlenecks that could slow down progress.
The advantages are not evenly distributed. Larger, well-capitalized developers like EquinixAscenty and Scala Data Centers have a significant edge in accessing financing, reinforcing market concentration. This trend is likely to continue, with the benefits of AI primarily accruing to the largest and most well-prepared companies.
The Role of Energy and Regulation
The adoption of AI is not solely driven by demand. According to Moody’s, the availability of energy, transmission capacity, regulatory clarity, and access to financing are equally critical. These factors are shaping the pace of AI adoption and determining which countries are likely to succeed.
For instance, the Dominican Republic is actively positioning itself as a regional technology hub, launching a national AI strategy and collaborating with NVIDIA. However, the country faces a significant challenge: financing the companies expected to compete in these industries. The financial system is geared towards credit, which is not always suitable for innovative startups that may take years to become profitable.
The Financial Challenge
The financial systems in many Latin American countries are not equipped to support the uncertainty inherent in AI startups. Traditional credit mechanisms, which rely on collateral and predictable cash flows, are not designed for companies that may spend years building intellectual property before becoming profitable. This gap in financing is a significant barrier to entry for many potential innovators.
