Initiatives for Safe Drinking Water in India

The Sivasagar District Medicine Dealers’ Association in Assam, India, has launched a commendable initiative to provide safe drinking water to hospitals, health centers, and public institutions. By installing Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification systems, the association aims to ensure that patients, healthcare workers, and the general public have access to clean water. The project has already seen success with installations at the Amguri Community Health Centre and the Demow police station.

This initiative is particularly timely given the acute drinking water crisis in many parts of Assam. Groundwater Contamination in Haryana

In Haryana, the situation is far more alarming. The state government has admitted that in 2026, 62% of the blocks had groundwater with Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) levels exceeding the acceptable limit of 500 mg/litre. Shockingly, 35 blocks had TDS levels exceeding 1,000 mg/litre, with some areas recording levels as high as 9,553 mg/litre. This severe contamination poses significant health risks, including the potential for kidney stones and high blood pressure.

The data, shared by Minister for Public Health Engineering Department Ranbir Gangwa, reveals a deteriorating water quality trend. Compared to 2026, groundwater quality worsened in 65.5% of the blocks by 2026. The districts of Faridabad, Palwal, Panchkula, Kurukshetra, and Yamunanagar are entirely dependent on groundwater, exacerbating the crisis. The government has also acknowledged 41,275 complaints of drinking water contamination since 2019, with Rohtak being the most affected district.

The high TDS levels indicate the presence of dangerous heavy metals such as lead and arsenic, as well as nitrates from runoff or pollution. This contamination not only makes the water unsuitable for drinking but also highlights the urgent need for effective water treatment and management strategies.

Water and Sanitation Crises in South Africa

South Africa is facing its own set of water and sanitation challenges. The crisis is so severe that the government plans to impose personal criminal liability on municipal managers for service failures and pollution. An amendment to the National Water Act aims to hold officials accountable for the escalating water crisis. Despite allocating over R156 billion in grants and subsidies for water and sanitation access, the country continues to grapple with damaged pipelines and raw sewage spilling onto streets and rivers.

The Department of Water and Sanitation has imposed restrictions on the uMngeni uThukela Water Supply System to reduce water extraction from rivers. However, the aging infrastructure and increasing water demand pose significant challenges. In Durban, the eThekwini Municipality is losing vast amounts of water, with losses exceeding 65% and approximately 13,000 water leaks across the city. The municipality has resolved a plumbers’ crisis and is working on refurbishing wastewater treatment works to meet Green Drop compliance standards.

In Johannesburg, smart technology is being deployed to reduce water losses. Smart pressure controllers and noise loggers are being installed to manage pressure more effectively and detect underground leaks. These interventions aim to lower high system pressure and decrease minimum night flow losses. Meanwhile, in Cape Town, the Public Protector has found that complaints of poor service delivery were substantiated, highlighting the municipality’s failure to maintain sewer infrastructure.

The global water crisis is a multifaceted issue that requires urgent attention and innovative solutions. While initiatives like those in Assam are making a difference, the challenges in Haryana and South Africa underscore the need for sustained efforts and investment in water infrastructure and management.
