Join us in discovering the inspiring stories and meaningful connections forged at the Alumni in Healthcare Reception.

On an engaging evening in Orange County, more than 120 alumni from Chapman University gathered for the annual Alumni in Healthcare Reception. This event brought together professionals from various fields, including clinical practice, biotechnology, and health law, creating an atmosphere of connection and shared goals among attendees.

The gathering served not only as a reunion but also as an essential networking opportunity for senior students eager to explore career paths in healthcare. Many participants departed feeling energized and armed with valuable insights regarding their future careers.

Insights from the university leadership

Dr. Michael Ibba, Executive Vice President, Provost, and Chief Academic Officer, addressed the audience, highlighting his dual role as both an administrator and a scientist. His remarks resonated with attendees as he expressed his commitment to improving health outcomes.

“With a background in microbiology and biochemistry, I am here not just as a representative of our institution, but as someone personally invested in your endeavors,” remarked Provost Ibba.

He emphasized that Chapman University embodies a collaborative community, where individuals from various disciplines come together for a common purpose. Whether in the advanced labs at the Keck Center or the innovative spaces at the Rinker Health Science Campus, he underscored the significance of interdisciplinary cooperation.

Collaboration as a core value

“Healthcare is a universal necessity, and it is essential to unite diverse minds to address pressing societal challenges,” he stated. He highlighted a recent interdisciplinary symposium that took place during President Matt Parlow’s inauguration week. The event featured esteemed speakers, including the California Surgeon General, alongside Chapman faculty from various fields such as psychology, sociology, and pediatrics.

Provost Ibba emphasized, “This collaborative spirit embodies the Chapman ethos. My vision as provost is to create innovative systems that enable meaningful progress.”

Growing opportunities in healthcare

In his recent address, Ibba highlighted Chapman University’s growing commitment to healthcare education and its positive influence on local communities. “Our Rinker Health Science Campus has thrived in Irvine for over a decade. The addition of the Campus Center two years ago has significantly enhanced our offerings,” he noted.

He elaborated on the expanding range of programs designed to uplift the communities within Orange County. This includes innovative academic initiatives, increased research opportunities, and pioneering work across various colleges, such as Schmid College, Crean College, Fowler School of Engineering, and the School of Pharmacy.

Experiential learning at the forefront

“Our students benefit from exceptional opportunities to apply their education in real-world contexts, including advanced laboratories and community partnerships that emphasize experiential learning,” said a representative. “Chapman is on an exciting upward trajectory, with our students and alumni making a significant impact worldwide.”

Reflections from alumni

For many alumni who attended, the gathering served as a poignant reminder of their original motivations to pursue careers in healthcare. Throughout the evening, alumni shared stories that highlighted how their experiences at Chapman have consistently shaped their professional journeys and inspired them to contribute back to the community.

Ally Lentz, a 2013 graduate and the Senior Associate Director of Donor Experience at CHOC Foundation—one of Chapman’s key employers—discussed the enduring connection between Chapman and children’s health in Orange County.

Strengthening partnerships in healthcare

“The bond between Chapman and CHOC, a part of Rady Children’s Health, has flourished for many years,” said Lentz. “Witnessing the partnership evolve beautifully since I graduated and began my journey at CHOC nearly 13 years ago has been a true gift. Both entities are intricately linked through collaborations, research initiatives, and numerous programs.”

This sentiment resonated with many alumni, who emphasized their active role in enhancing the healthcare sector.

The evening concluded with a sense of camaraderie and collective ambition. Attendees left motivated to continue advancing healthcare, inspired by the values and experiences cultivated during their time at Chapman University.
