In a significant move for Australia’s tech infrastructure, Macquarie Data Centres has announced plans to construct a cutting-edge engineering and technology campus in Sydney’s Macquarie Park. This ambitious project will be co-located with a 200MW data centre marking a substantial investment in the region’s digital capabilities.
The initiative is part of Macquarie Technology Group’s strategy to enhance both technological capacity and community support. The company has acquired a 34,200 square metre development site subject to planning approvals expected in the coming weeks.
Innovative design and sustainability features
The proposed facility will incorporate advanced air cooling and closed-loop technology for primary heat rejection, significantly reducing water consumption. The design also supports high-density direct-to-chip liquid and air cooling in data halls, ensuring optimal performance and efficiency.
David Hirst, CEO of Macquarie Data Centres, emphasized the project’s commitment to sustainability and innovation: “The proposed campus will also deliver lasting benefits to the local community. In partnership with Macquarie University, students and researchers will gain hands-on access to the latest data centre, cyber security and cloud technologies.”
Community engagement and educational opportunities
Beyond its technological advancements, the campus aims to foster strong community ties. In collaboration with Macquarie University, the project will provide practical opportunities for students and researchers to engage with cutting-edge technologies in data centres, cybersecurity, AI, and cloud computing.
The campus will also include a one-acre intergenerational community park for residents of the City of Ryde, featuring an outdoor art gallery to showcase local talent. This initiative aligns with the company’s ambition to support early childhood literacy and career planning for students.
Strategic location and future prospects
Situated in a high-tech industrial zone within one of Sydney’s most fibre-rich technology corridors, the campus is strategically positioned to support existing and prospective customers. The design stage offers opportunities for collaboration, allowing customers to incorporate their design specifications early in the process.
Construction is anticipated to be completed by late 2029 subject to necessary approvals. Macquarie Data Centres, recognized as one of Australia’s most certified data centre operators, has a proven track record in the region, having worked in Macquarie Park for 16 years.
Last year, the company completed the structural phase of its newest AI and cloud data centre, IC3 Super West, which supported over 2,400 construction, design, and fit-out jobs and represented the only new AI capacity added in Sydney’s North Zone in 2026.
