In a groundbreaking moment for both robotics and sports, Hyundai Motor Company and Boston Dynamics brought the Atlas humanoid robot to the FIFA World Cup 2026™. This historic deployment marked the first time a humanoid robot has been integrated into a live match environment, demonstrating the potential of advanced robotics on a global stage.

The robot made its debut during the Round of 16 match at the New York/New Jersey Stadium, where it captivated audiences with a series of iconic goal celebrations inspired by some of the world’s top footballers. This innovative performance highlighted Hyundai’s commitment to human-centered innovation and its vision of Progress for Humanity.

Atlas’s Historic Performance

Atlas emerged from the player tunnel at halftime, performing a sequence of goal celebrations mimicking the styles of Harry Kane, Erling Haaland, Matheus Cunha, and Son Heung-min. The robot’s precise and expressive movements heightened the stadium atmosphere, showcasing its advanced mobility and coordination. Following the performance, Atlas delivered the ceremonial match ball to the referee, marking the start of the second half.

The halftime activation was a significant milestone for robotics, as it demonstrated the real-world capabilities of the production version of Atlas, which was first introduced at CES 2026. This event also marked the first-ever integration of a humanoid robot into a FIFA World Cup live match environment, underscoring Hyundai’s leadership in robotics and its partnership with FIFA.

The Technology Behind Atlas

Atlas’s performance was powered by several core robotics capabilities that enable advanced movement and real-world interaction. Retargeting technology allowed Atlas to translate and adapt human movements to its robotic form, ensuring that the essence of the iconic celebrations was preserved. Reinforcement learning was used to train and refine movements through thousands of simulations, while whole-body control coordinated movement across the robot’s entire body for fluid and balanced motion.
