RGG Studio’s Stranger Than Heaven is set to redefine the action gaming landscape with its innovative combat system and rich narrative. Following a series of reveals throughout the year, the game’s first hands-on demo at Summer Game Fest: Play Days offered a glimpse into its unique mechanics and immersive world.
The demo focused on combat, showcasing a series of encounters across three cities: FukuokaHiroshimaand Osaka. Unlike previous titles, Stranger Than Heaven introduces a more granular approach to combat, replacing button-mashing with a system that emphasizes player expressiveness and variety.
Revolutionary Combat Mechanics
The combat system in Stranger Than Heaven is a significant departure from traditional melee-dominated action games. Players control Makoto Daito’s left and right sides independently, using the LB and LT triggers for left-sided attacks and RB and RT for right-sided attacks. This allows for a wide range of combos and strategies, making each encounter unique.
In addition to hand-to-hand combat, the game features a variety of weapons, including knives, crowbars, and sledgehammers. Players can cycle through their inventory using the Y button, adding another layer of strategy to battles. The demo also introduced grapples, blocks, parries, and dodges, which can be combined with shoulder and face buttons for effective defensive counters.
Exploring Three Decades of Combat
The demo took players through three different decades, each with its own set of challenges and enemies. In 1915 Kokura, Fukuokaplayers faced a group of bedraggled grunts in a high-stakes battle that emphasized the game’s brutal and realistic combat. The demo highlighted the importance of managing health and using a variety of attacks to overcome enemies.
In 1929 Kure, Hiroshimaplayers faced a group of thugs led by a massive gangster. This encounter introduced new mechanics, such as enemies grabbing weapons, forcing players to adapt their strategies. The demo showcased the importance of managing stamina and using a variety of weapons to overcome larger and more powerful enemies.
The final challenge took place in 1943 Minami, Osakawhere players faced a wiry, heavily tattooed yakuza with a sword. This encounter tested players’ blocking, parrying, and dodging skills, as well as their ability to manage health and stamina. The demo highlighted the game’s high difficulty and the satisfaction of overcoming challenging enemies.
