The Advanced Therapeutics Manufacturing Facility (ATMF) currently under construction at UBC’s Vancouver campus, is a cornerstone of CIEBH. This purpose-built facility is designed to manufacture advanced cell and gene therapies focusing on early-stage clinical trials. It will be the first of its kind in Western Canada, providing researchers and biotechnology companies with the specialized environment needed to advance promising discoveries.

“The ATMF will give researchers and biotech startups the ability to manufacture advanced, clinical-grade therapies right here in BC,” says Dr. Megan Levings, ATMF co-director. “That means keeping more Canadian science in Canada—powering up BC’s life sciences sector with discoveries, skilled talent, new companies and jobs—while also accelerating translation from the lab to clinic so patients have access to lifesaving treatments sooner.”

The impact of the ATMF extends beyond the laboratory. By providing the necessary infrastructure for commercializing discoveries in BC, the ATMF will help attract investment and fuel BC’s biotech boom, one of the province’s fastest-growing industries. CIEBH serves as the connective tissue that brings together academic institutions, industry partners, healthcare organizations, governments, and community organizations. “CIEBH is really the connective tissue,” says Dr. Michelle Wong, Executive Director of CIEBH and Senior Director of Research at the Faculty of Medicine. “It’s the glue that brings together all these different stakeholders so we can build those relationships in a way that creates real impact.”

Every organization involved in health research has unique expertise. Individually, each plays an important role. Together, they can accomplish something far greater. “When we’re working together,” says Dr. Wong, “we create better-informed care. The feedback we receive from clinicians helps shape the research questions we’re asking, which ultimately leads to more effective, and increasingly personalized, treatments.”

Philanthropy plays a unique role in this ecosystem. Looking ahead, Dr. Wong believes BC has everything needed to become an internationally recognized biotechnology leader: world-class researchers, advanced infrastructure, an industry-ready workforce, and strong partnerships across academia, healthcare, industry, and government. “The real strength of BC is our culture of collaboration,” says Dr. Wong. “We’re bringing together the right people, from the right sectors, to solve problems together. That’s what’s creating an innovation ecosystem—and that’s what’s going to make the difference pushing forward.”
