Jersey City gets new 85,000-sq-ft ShopRite with green features

The latest ShopRite location has debuted in Jersey City’s Exchange Place district, occupying the second floor of the 60-story Everton residential tower at 99 Provost Street. Spanning roughly 85,000 sq ft, the store replaces a smaller outlet that closed the previous week and promises a modern, expanded shopping experience for residents and commuters alike.

Location, size and operating hours

Strategically positioned within a high-rise mixed-use building, the supermarket enjoys panoramic views of the waterfront while serving a dense urban population. It opens daily from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., providing ample time for early-bird grocery runs and late-night snack grabs. The venue is supported by four passenger elevators, three escalators, and two dedicated cart-mover lifts, ensuring smooth movement between the lobby, parking decks and the selling floor.

Eco-friendly design and sustainability initiatives

From daylight-filled aisles to energy-efficient refrigeration, the new ShopRite emphasizes sustainability at every turn. Recyclable fixtures, low-VOC paints, and a rooftop garden that supplies a portion of the produce department underscore the retailer’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint. In addition, the store employs a “zero-waste” policy in its bakery and deli, diverting surplus food to local charities.

High-tech shopping experience: autonomous Caper carts

Perhaps the most eye-catching innovation is the deployment of Caper carts autonomous shopping carts that follow customers through the aisles via Bluetooth and sensor fusion. Shoppers can summon a cart with a tap on the store’s mobile app, and the cart will navigate around obstacles, freeing hands for product inspection. The same app offers ticketless parking allowing users to reserve a spot on one of two parking decks and pay directly from their phone.

Enhanced food services and community engagement

To celebrate the grand opening, the market runs tasting stations from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day, spotlighting offerings from the in-house Patsy’s Butcher Shop and the new Antoinette’s Kitchen. A “Singing Mozzarella Chef” performs on weekend mornings, drawing families to a live demonstration of cheese pulling. The grocery also houses a full-service bake shop, hot bar, soup bar, and a registered dietitian who provides personalized nutrition counseling.
