The Georgia Institute of Technology has unveiled an ambitious new initiative: the Parker H. Petit Center for AI-Driven Health Innovation. This cutting-edge research hub aims to harness the power of artificial intelligence to predict, treat, and prevent diseases, marking a significant leap forward in medical research.

Made possible by a generous commitment from technology entrepreneur and Georgia Tech alumnus Parker H. “Pete” Petit the center builds upon the success of the Parker H. Petit Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience (IBB). Since 1980, Petit has been a steadfast supporter of Georgia Tech, contributing to numerous interdisciplinary research initiatives.

The Intersection of AI and Healthcare

The new center will operate under the Institute for Data Engineering and Science (IDEaS) bringing together researchers from diverse fields to advance AI-driven approaches to human health. The center’s work will focus on strengthening the tools, partnerships, and research pathways needed to bridge the gap between laboratory discoveries and real-world patient care.

One of the center’s primary goals is to use AI to create more precise models of how diseases function within the body. The first research initiative will involve developing virtual models of human cells led by Jeffrey Skolnick Regents’ Professor and Mary and Maisie Gibson Chair in Computational Systems Biology. These models will be used to study disease progression and identify personalized treatments for individual patients.

Accelerating Medical Discoveries

By modeling disease at the cellular level, researchers can test hypotheses more rapidly, uncover connections between different diseases, and focus on therapies tailored to a patient’s unique biology. This approach has the potential to expedite the discovery of new treatments for some of the most challenging diseases, including pancreatic cancer and glioblastoma an aggressive form of brain cancer.

“Medical innovation is one of the fastest-growing areas in Georgia Tech’s research, and Pete Petit’s commitment will help us further shape the future of medicine,” said Ángel Cabrera president of Georgia Tech. “This new research center will find new ways to harness the power of AI to accelerate critical medical discoveries and move them into clinical settings so patients can get the care they need.”

Expanding Horizons in Healthcare

Over time, the Petit Center’s work will expand into areas such as cancer biomarker discoveryhealthy agingadvanced cellular therapies and AI-supported healthcare systems. Researchers affiliated with the center will collaborate across fields and with clinical and healthcare organizations to ensure that discoveries are translated into practical applications.

“Georgia Tech has the expertise to redefine what is possible in healthcare through AI,” said Skolnick. “By combining advanced computational methods with biological and medical insights, we can create powerful new approaches to predicting disease, identifying treatments, and improving patient outcomes.”

Petit’s commitment will support advanced computing infrastructure, graduate and postdoctoral fellowships, seed research grants, and annual programs that bring together leading researchers from around the world working at the intersection of AI and health.
