RAM price surge forces Nothing to delay CMF Phone 2 Pro successor

The smartphone industry is facing unprecedented challenges due to the global RAM shortage with Nothing becoming the latest company to adjust their production roadmap. The tech startup has announced the postponement of their CMF Phone 2 Pro successor, citing the unsustainable rise in memory prices as the primary reason.

This development comes as a significant setback for the company, which has been actively expanding its product lineup. The decision underscores the widespread impact of the memory crisis on the tech industry, affecting both established giants and emerging players alike.

RAM costs double, forcing production delays

Akis Evangelidis co-founder of Nothing, revealed in a post on X that the company was actively working on a successor to the CMF Phone 2 Pro. However, the dramatic increase in RAM prices has made it financially unviable to launch a new device this year. Evangelidis stated, “We were working on a successor but with memory prices where they are right now, we can’t build a phone that feels like a genuine step forward at a price that makes sense for CMF.”

The situation is further exacerbated by the fact that RAM costs have doubled twice in a relatively short period. Carl Pei CEO and co-founder of Nothing, highlighted that for the Phone 4A memory costs doubled between the decision to build the device and its launch. He added, “They’ve doubled again since.” Pei emphasized that memory is now the most expensive component in a smartphone reflecting the severity of the current market conditions.

The broader impact of the RAM shortage

The RAM shortage is not an isolated issue for Nothing. The crisis is affecting the entire smartphone industry, with even tech titans like Apple feeling the pinch. Tim Cook Apple’s CEO, recently announced that the company would be raising prices, citing the unsustainable situation caused by the RAM shortage.

This global memory crisis is a result of increased demand and supply chain disruptions which have led to a significant imbalance in the market. The situation is particularly challenging for companies aiming to produce Affordable smartphones as the rising costs of components make it difficult to maintain competitive pricing.

Nothing’s future plans and new product categories

Despite the setback, Nothing is not slowing down its Evangelidis mentioned that the company still has several new products launching and is exploring entirely new categories. He also hinted that the smartphone launch season at Nothing isn’t over yet suggesting that other devices might still be in the pipeline.

This approach reflects Nothing’s commitment to innovation and diversification, even in the face of significant market challenges. The company’s ability to adapt and explore new avenues will be crucial in navigating the current memory crisis and maintaining its competitive edge in the tech industry.
