The PocketMage is a modern take on the classic personal digital assistant a device many thought had vanished with the rise of smartphones. Developed by Talisman Design this clamshell PDA is currently crowdfunding on Crowd Supply offering a unique blend of e-paper and OLED displays paired with a tactile keyboard.
Unlike the bulky PicoCalc or the tablet-sized Alpha the PocketMage is designed to fit comfortably in a pocket. Its dual-display setup—featuring a 3.1-inch e-paper screen and a smaller 1.8-inch OLED display—provides a balance between battery efficiency and responsiveness. Powered by an ESP32-S3 microcontroller the device is geared toward productivity tasks, offering apps like a calendar, journal, dictionary, and a Markdown text editor.
PocketMage’s Dual-Display Design and Hardware Specifications
The PocketMage’s primary display is a 3.1-inch, 320×240 e-paper screen, ideal for reading and writing. Above the QWERTY keyboard, a smaller 1.8-inch OLED display handles menus and dynamic interactions. The device also includes a capacitive touch bar for scrolling, a 1,200mAh battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a USB-C port for peripherals.
With 2MB of RAM and 16MB of storage, expandable via a microSD card, the PocketMage is designed for simplicity and efficiency. Its open-source nature allows for customization and expansion, with a powered expansion port for adding custom hardware. The device runs on a custom operating system based on FreeRTOS, featuring a built-in software suite for productivity, writing, and programming.
PocketMage’s Target Audience and Use Cases
The PocketMage is tailored for writers, engineers, and hackers. For writers, it serves as a sunlight-readable typewriter, perfect for drafting manuscripts or taking notes. The physical keyboard ensures fast and accurate input, while the integrated Markdown text editor simplifies formatting.
For engineers and hackers, the PocketMage acts as a portable IDE, terminal, and hardware bridge. Its Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, combined with the tactile interface, make it an ideal tool for writing programs and scripts on the go. The expansion port allows for custom hardware add-ons, further enhancing its versatility.
PocketMage’s Crowdfunding and Availability
The PocketMage is available in two preorder options on Crowd Supply: a fully assembled version for $235 and a DIY kit for $185. The DIY kit requires only a screwdriver to assemble, with no soldering needed. Orders placed now are expected to ship by March 2027 at the earliest.
The crowdfunding campaign has already raised over $142,000, surpassing its $100,000 goal. The campaign ends on September 3, 2026, at 04:59 PM PDT. Backers can choose between parchment (gray) or royal purple accent colors for their PocketMage.
The PocketMage represents a unique blend of retro design and modern technology, offering a distraction-free alternative to smartphones. With its open-source software and expandable hardware, it’s a tool that caters to a wide range of users, from writers to engineers. As the crowdfunding campaign progresses, the PocketMage is poised to become a notable addition to the world of portable computing.
