While programs like The Crown and Mindhunter once held my attention, the overwhelming number of options often creates a sense of déjà vu, prompting questions about the value of my monthly payments.

Switching to an over-the-air antenna
This led me to consider investing in an over-the-air antenna. The idea of accessing dozens of channels without subscription fees was appealing. For the cost of two months of Netflix, I could purchase and set up a compact antenna to provide a variety of channels to my television.
One standout show quickly captured my attention: Abbott Elementary. This hilarious sitcom, with its quick wit and engaging characters, offers a perfect 22-minute runtime—free from filler episodes. Why continue to pay for Hulu when I could enjoy it over-the-air at no cost?
Setting up the system
To maximize the benefits of my new antenna, I considered integrating a DVR system. I discovered Plex, a versatile tool that serves as both a streaming platform and a self-hosted DVR with the appropriate hardware. Although I already had a Plex media server running on a Raspberry Pi 5, I had yet to configure it for DVR functionality.
Choosing the right equipment
My first task was acquiring a suitable antenna. Residing in a Brooklyn brownstone with limited indoor reception posed a challenge. Fortunately, I had access to a small backyard where I could install a $38 GE outdoor antenna, aimed directly at the broadcast towers in Manhattan. This setup promised robust channel options.
Next, I needed a compatible TV tuner for Plex. After researching various options, I chose the SiliconDust HDHomeRun Flex Duo, a dual-tuner model priced at $110. This decision was influenced by positive reviews of its more advanced counterpart, the Flex 4K.
Connecting and configuring
Connecting the HDHomeRun to my network proved straightforward. With an Ethernet cable in place, Plex quickly recognized the device, enabling a channel scan. To my surprise, I discovered a total of 66 stations, many of which were previously unknown to me.
Plex enhances the viewing experience with its comprehensive electronic programming guide. Users can search for shows by title, browse by genre, or explore channels. The ability to record upcoming shows or watch live TV—complete with pause and rewind features—significantly improved my viewing flexibility.
Understanding the costs
It is important to note that Plex’s programming guide requires a subscription to Plex Pass, which has recently increased to $7 per month, $70 annually, or $250 for a lifetime subscription. While alternatives for self-hosted DVRs, such as Channels DVR and Emby, also come with fees, the Tablo DVR, priced at $100, offers a subscription-free programming guide. In contrast, Jellyfin, a free and open-source media server, is gaining popularity but requires more setup effort for guide data.
