In a recent announcement, Framework revealed that it is adjusting the pricing for its upcoming Framework Laptop 13 Pro. The decision comes in response to a substantial increase in the cost of LPCAMM2 memory which has more than doubled compared to previous inventory. This adjustment affects both the laptops and mainboards, as other component prices have also risen.
Chief Executive Nirav Patel explained in a blog post that the company’s supplier of LPCAMM2 memory updated pricing far beyond what was anticipated. Instead of the expected low-to-mid double-digit percentage increase, the new prices are more than double the previous inventory costs. This unexpected surge has necessitated a reevaluation of the pricing strategy to mitigate financial risk.
Memory Module Allocations and Price Changes
The LPCAMM2 memory is specifically used in the Intel Core Ultra Series 3 version of the laptop, while models with AMD Ryzen AI 300 processors continue to use SO-DIMMs. Framework has enough LPCAMM2 modules to fulfill existing pre-orders, but the allocation of 64GB, 32GB, and 16GB options has been adjusted to match inventory levels.
For pre-orders beyond Batch 4 of laptops and Batch 7 of mainboards, the configuration has been updated to use a 32GB module at the original 32GB price. Remaining 32GB modules are allocated to DIY Edition and mainboard pre-orders through Batch 4 and Batch 7. For orders beyond that, a 16GB module will be used at the original 16GB price. Notably, pre-built orders originally containing 32GB will not be adjusted to 16GB, as this configuration is planned for future introduction.
New Pricing Structure
Framework will continue to offer 16GB LPCAMM2 modules at $239 but will increase the cost once those modules are depleted. The 32GB modules will now be priced at $800, up from $439, while the 64GB modules in pre-orders going forward will be priced at $1,600, up from $849. These changes reflect the significant increase in component costs.
In addition to memory module adjustments, Framework is also raising the price of systems and mainboards in new orders. The cost increases are attributed to the rising prices of X7 and X9 chips, Windows license costs, and other silicon components for some Ryzen AI 300 Series configurations. Despite these increases, Framework’s supply chain experts have managed to reduce costs on certain components, such as 48GB DDR5 modules and specific SSD models.
Commitment to Transparency and Customer Satisfaction
Framework has been transparent about these changes, updating its blog to keep customers informed. The company has also assured that pre-orders with components experiencing lower pricing will have their prices adjusted accordingly if not yet fulfilled. If prices increase, Framework will honor the original pre-order price.
The first batch of pre-orders for the Laptop 13 Pro is set to ship in July, giving the company a limited window to address these changes. Framework’s proactive approach to communicating these adjustments highlights its commitment to maintaining customer trust amidst a challenging supply chain environment.
