As summer temperatures rise, so does the presence of mosquitoes, but the species biting us are changing. Climate change is expanding the ranges of these disease-carrying insects into historically temperate regions like New England. This shift brings new risks, as invasive species like the Asian tiger mosquito, capable of transmitting dengue and Zika move northward.
The Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station has identified 54 mosquito species statewide, including invasive ones. Their monitoring program is crucial for preventing outbreaks, yet many areas lack such comprehensive surveillance. This patchwork approach leaves gaps in our understanding and response to mosquito-borne diseases.
Climate Change and Mosquito Expansion
Global warming is not only expanding mosquito ranges but also lengthening the transmission season. Warmer temperatures accelerate mosquito development, allowing for multiple breeding cycles in new areas. This increase in mosquito activity has led to more frequent outbreaks of diseases like West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis.
In the Northeast, climate change alters mosquito-borne disease risks by changing habitats and reducing natural predators. Researchers predict that tropical diseases like Zikadenguechikungunya and even malaria will become established in temperate areas due to rising temperatures.
The Challenges of Mosquito Surveillance
Monitoring mosquito populations is a labor-intensive and expensive process. Teams must set and check traps, which can attract mosquitoes using decaying organic material or carbon dioxide from dry ice. In rural areas, accessing dry ice can be difficult, necessitating creative solutions like making it locally.
Beyond logistical challenges, communication and data sharing between counties and states are often inadequate. This fragmented system allows some invasive species to go undetected. Funding is another significant hurdle, as many counties lack the resources to maintain consistent monitoring programs.
The Need for Comprehensive Surveillance
A bill introduced in the New York State Legislature aims to establish a comprehensive mosquito surveillance program. Currently, the system is described as “sparse and disintegrated,” hindering effective public health responses. Proactive measures, such as removing standing water, applying larvicides, and public awareness campaigns, are essential for prevention.
Greater centralization and coordination are needed, but the cost remains a deterrent. Despite the challenges, any improvement in surveillance is better than none. As climate change continues to reshape mosquito habitats, robust monitoring programs will be crucial for protecting public health.
