The world’s reliance on petroleum has turned ordinary trade routes into strategic battlefields. From the Persian Gulf to the Black Sea, a series of oil conflicts now dominate headlines, and none of them involve electric cars directly. Yet the growing uptake of electric vehicles is already influencing how these disputes shape global oil availability.

Six distinct flashpoints are currently throttling the flow of crude, while a handful of additional tensions linger nearby. Understanding each hotspot—and how emerging mobility technologies intersect with them—helps trace the link between geopolitics and the accelerating shift toward electrified transport.

Strait of Hormuz blockade and its cascading effects

Since March, the Strait of Hormuz—once responsible for roughly one fifth of the planet’s oil traffic—has been effectively shut down. The closure followed an unprovoked conflict launched by the United States and Israel against Iran, which resulted in the death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In retaliation, Iran announced the waterway closed to commercial vessels.

Although a few tankers have slipped through intermittently, Early fears of an immediate, massive price spike proved overstated; diesel prices in the United States have risen to record levels, but the shock was softened by a sharp reduction in Chinese oil consumption. China’s rapid transition to electrified transportation cut its imports, a move some observers dubbed “saving the world” because it prevented a deeper market collapse.

To compensate, oil exporters have turned to a historic Saudi pipeline that runs east-to-west across the kingdom. This line, built in the 1980s for a prior Hormuz crisis, was temporarily disabled after a Houthis-launched drone strike destroyed a pumping station. The Houthis an Iran-backed rebel group fighting a civil war in Yemen since 2014, also operate near the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait a conduit for about nine percent of global seaborne oil. Their attacks have prompted the formation of a defensive pact to safeguard ships transiting the Gulf of Aden, dividing attention between the two chokepoints.

Other oil-sensitive corridors and regional upheavals

Beyond the Persian Gulf, the Black Sea region has become another flashpoint. In 2014, Russia annexed Crimea, gaining full control of the Kerch Strait which links the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea and ultimately to Mediterranean trade routes. While this initially boosted Russia’s export capacity, sanctions after the 2022 invasion of eastern Ukraine have crippled its ability to move crude abroad.

Ukraine has responded by targeting Russian refining capacity. To date, 24 of Russia’s 33 largest refineries have been hit, shrinking the country’s domestic processing to about 70 percent of its own demand. The resulting fuel shortages have spurred a dramatic rise in Ukrainian electric-car sales, which more than doubled in the last three months.

Libya, still wrestling with political instability after the overthrow of Muammar Gaddafi, recently saw its petroleum security forces suspend output at several fields and shut a pipeline in pursuit of ownership changes. Although the volume at stake is smaller than in the Gulf, any disruption reverberates across an already fragile market.

In South America, the United States’ unannounced operation that captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and later installed former vice-president Delcy Rodríguez has left the country’s oil sector in limbo. A recent agreement grants U.S. firms access to untapped greenfield sites, but development timelines extend up to a decade—potentially beyond the peak of global oil demand.

Closer to home, the U.S. has imposed an oil blockade on Cuba, cutting off the island’s cheap Venezuelan supplies and any other imports. The resulting energy crisis has forced hospitals to rely on hand-pumped ventilators and prompted a grass-roots shift toward solar power and electric tricycles for waste collection.

The trade dispute between the United States and Canada, while not a hot war, threatens to unwind decades of integrated oil logistics. Canadian crude, traditionally refined in U.S. plants, may face new barriers, even as Canada opens its market to inexpensive Chinese electric vehicles, further accelerating EV adoption north of the border.

Electric mobility as a lever on oil demand

Across all these scenarios, a common thread emerges: the majority of global oil is burned in transportation especially light-duty passenger cars and trucks. A typical gasoline vehicle consumes around 50,000 lb of oil over its lifespan, whereas an electric vehicle draws power that can be generated locally—often from renewable sources—reducing the need for imported crude.

Electric drivetrains are roughly four times more efficient than internal-combustion engines, meaning less energy is required to travel the same distance. Moreover, the raw materials that power EVs are used in far smaller quantities per vehicle and can be recycled, curbing the environmental and geopolitical risks linked to oil extraction.

China’s aggressive EV rollout has already demonstrated how demand-side shifts can blunt the impact of a major chokepoint. In Russia, the post-refinery-attack surge in EV purchases mirrors a similar pattern, while Cuba’s forced pivot to solar and electric transport illustrates resilience born of necessity.

Strategic petroleum reserves worldwide are being drawn down to cushion price volatility, but these buffers are finite. China, which held the largest reserve and temporarily stopped buying oil, is now contemplating a restart—an action that could reignite price pressures.

In the long term, climate-driven extremes—such as the hurricane that climate models link to a 200-fold increase in likelihood—are set to intensify competition for resources, reinforcing the strategic value of energy independence.

Collectively, these dynamics suggest that widespread adoption of electric vehicles offers a concrete pathway to reduce reliance on a commodity that repeatedly fuels conflict.
