Review of the Old Town Sportsman 120 Pro Kayak: Tradition and Technology Combined

The Old Town brand, celebrated for over 125 years, has always been synonymous with quality and innovation in watercraft. In early June, I had the privilege of visiting their Maine plant and getting my hands on their latest creation: the Sportsman 120 Pro kayak. This vessel is a testament to the company’s ability to honor its heritage while embracing modern technology. Priced at just $1,999, it offers exceptional value, leaving room in your budget for additional motors and electronics.

As someone who has been fishing from various watercraft since before kayak fishing became popular, I was eager to test the Sportsman 120 Pro. My first kayak, an Old Town Loon, was a sit-in recreational boat that I modified for gear storage. Over the years, fishing kayaks have evolved significantly, with features tailored specifically for anglers. The Sportsman 120 Pro builds on the success of the Sportsman 120 PDL Pro, incorporating electric propulsion for enhanced performance.

The Evolution of Fishing Kayaks

Fishing kayaks have come a long way from their sit-in origins. Today’s models are designed with anglers in mind, featuring innovations that were once unthinkable. The transition from paddles to pedals and now to electric motors has revolutionized the way we navigate the waters. The Sportsman 120 Pro is a prime example of this evolution, offering a blend of stability, customization, and advanced features.

Weighing in at 102 pounds, the Sportsman 120 Pro is lightweight enough to be car-topped, though it’s more convenient to use a trailer or truck bed. Its design includes ample space for accessories, with 140 inches of aluminum accessory rails on the bow and dual rails on the stern. This makes it ideal for kayak tournament anglers and anyone looking to heavily customize their kayak. The bow hatch and storage caddy below the seat provide ample space for tackle and batteries, while three rod holders ensure your gear is always within reach.

Performance on the Water

Equipped with a Minn Kota Riptide Kayak Terrova motor, the Sportsman 120 Pro offers effortless navigation. The motor’s remote control allows for precise course correction and speed adjustment. The AutoPilot feature is particularly useful, enabling you to maintain a steady course with minimal input. During testing, the 55 pounds of thrust provided a top speed of around 4.5 miles per hour.

The AutoPilot feature also allows for slow, controlled movement along a course, perfect for casting to likely cover. The spot-lock feature keeps you anchored over productive water, enhancing your fishing experience. On a recent trip, I encountered challenging conditions with scattered fish. The motor’s capabilities allowed me to run-and-gun, staying on top of schools of fish and casting to likely spots.

The Future of Kayak Fishing

The Sportsman 120 Pro represents a significant step forward in kayak fishing technology. Its combination of traditional craftsmanship and modern innovation makes it a versatile choice for anglers of all levels. Whether you’re a tournament angler or a casual fisherman, this kayak offers the features and customization options you need to enhance your time on the water.

As the fishing industry continues to evolve, the Sportsman 120 Pro stands out as a vessel that honors the past while embracing the future. Its advanced features and affordable price make it a compelling choice for anyone looking to upgrade their fishing experience.
