Roy Student's Legacy: Revolutionizing the Gaming Industry

In the world of gambling technology, few names resonate as profoundly as Roy Student. On September 5, 2026, the industry lost a visionary whose contributions have become the bedrock of modern gaming. Student’s passing at the age of 83 marked the end of an era, but his legacy continues to shape the future of gambling technology.

Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1943, Student’s journey from humble beginnings to becoming a titan in the gaming industry is a story of ambition, curiosity, and relentless determination. His early life was marked by a passion for sports, which eventually led him to the world of technology and innovation.

From the Diamond to the Casino Floor

Before he became a gambling technology pioneer, Roy Student was a standout athlete. His childhood was spent playing stickball on the streets of New York, and his talent soon caught the attention of the New York Yankees. Student’s athletic prowess earned him a scholarship to the New York Institute of Technology where he continued to excel in sports.

In 1964, Student met Judy, who would become his lifelong partner. Their marriage, which spanned over six decades, was a cornerstone of his life. Together, they raised two sons, Glenn and Darren, and built a close-knit family that remained central to Student’s world.

A Career Defined by Innovation

Student’s career in gambling technology began with a pivotal decision to join General Instrument Corporation. This move eventually took him to Las Vegas, where he would make his mark on the gaming industry. In 1972, when MGM acquired a casino in Las Vegas, the company sought ways to automate accounting functions on the casino floor, including tracking markers and table-game bankrolls.

Student’s company won the contract, marking the beginning of his illustrious career in gaming technology. He later co-founded Gaming Systems International (GSI) which developed player-rating systems that became a fundamental part of casino operations. These systems remain widely used throughout the gaming industry today.

After selling GSI in 2001, Student became the president of Cyberview Technology a company that pioneered server-based gaming systems. These systems connected slot machines to a central server, a technology that was acquired by IGT in 2007 and has since become commonplace in casinos around the world.

The Non-Gaming Revenue Revolution

Student’s next venture, Applied Management Strategies saw him serving as a consultant to many of the world’s leading gaming companies. During this period, he became a leading advocate for recognizing the importance of non-gaming revenue the additional spending generated by casino customers beyond gambling. This insight helped shape the evolution of player rewards programs, where non-gaming expenditures are now a standard component of major casino loyalty and rewards systems.

Spanning several decades, Student’s career was pivotal in shaping what the modern gambling industry looks like. His contributions were honored in 2023 at ICE London, one of the biggest industry events for B2B companies in the gaming sector.

Roy Student’s legacy is a testament to the power of innovation and vision. His work has left an indelible mark on the gambling technology industry, and his insights continue to influence the way casinos operate today. As the industry continues to evolve, Student’s contributions will remain a guiding light for future innovators.
