Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 Review: What’s New and Worth Noting

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 offers subtle yet meaningful upgrades over its predecessor, with a focus on performance and fitness features.

Samsung Galaxy Watch 9 Review: What's New and Worth Noting

The Samsung Galaxy Watch 9, unveiled at the Galaxy Unpacked event in London, is a testament to Samsung’s commitment to refining its smartwatch lineup. While it may look similar to its predecessor, the Galaxy Watch 8, this new model packs several impressive upgrades that enhance performance and user experience.

Priced at $380 for the base model, the Galaxy Watch 9 is designed to appeal to a broad audience, particularly those interested in fitness tracking. It complements the more feature-rich and expensive Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, also introduced at the event.

Design and Comfort

The Galaxy Watch 9 maintains the familiar round face with a slightly boxy bevel, creating a squircle design that bridges the gap between square and circular. This understated look makes it versatile for both gym and office settings. Available in cream and graphite finishes, the watch offers a minimalist aesthetic. The real customization comes with the straps, which range from basic silicone sports bands to more appealing misty soft-touch two-tone bands in various colors.

One of the standout features of the Galaxy Watch 9 is its comfort. The 40-mm model fits perfectly, but even the larger 44-mm version is comfortable enough to wear throughout the day and night. This comfort was also noted by CNET principal writer Vanessa Hand Orellana, who found the Watch 8 comfortable enough to wear to bed.

Performance and Battery Life

Under the hood, the Galaxy Watch 9 boasts significant upgrades. It is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear Elite chip, which speeds up performance and improves real-time data processing. This enhancement is particularly beneficial for fitness tracking and AI features like Gemini.

The watch also features larger batteries: 390-mAh for the 40-mm model and 445-mAh for the 44-mm model. According to Samsung, these batteries provide 30-40 hours of runtime, a notable improvement over the previous models. Additionally, the watch uses AI to learn usage patterns, optimizing battery life further.

AI and Fitness Features

The Galaxy Watch 9 introduces several AI-driven features that enhance user interaction. For instance, if you set a photo as your watch face, the algorithm will insert time details in the empty spaces around the image. This feature adds a personal touch to the watch’s interface.

Activating Gemini on the Galaxy Watch 9 is now more convenient. Simply raise the watch to your mouth and start talking—no wake words are required. This hands-free interaction makes using the watch more seamless, especially when multiple Gemini-equipped devices are nearby.

The watch also includes a suite of new fitness features, such as vitals insights, a heart health checker, and a cardio load measurement. The Fitness Index provides a comprehensive overview of your health, including body composition, strength, and flexibility. Based on this data, the watch offers personalized training plans to help you achieve your fitness goals.

Samsung has created a robust fitness platform that supports users at any stage of their fitness journey. Whether you’re training for a triathlon or planning a mountain climb, the Galaxy Watch 9 offers tailored suggestions to improve your specific metrics.

The Galaxy Watch 9 will be available for preorder immediately and will go on general sale from August 7. The 40-mm Bluetooth version starts at $380, while the LTE model starts at $430. As we continue to test these watches, we’ll provide more insights into their features and battery life.
